When children first visit our school, they are naturally drawn into the classrooms because they look like such great places to play! Parents, however, are always relieved to know that our space is not only fun, it is also organized into distinct learning centers. Materials are carefully selected for each area so that no matter where children choose to spend their time, they are learning.
Tigard Playschool has a strong reputation in the community for a warm, loving environment with close teacher-student relationships. Our curriculum is known for its creative art, sensory science, enthusiastic music and movement program and popular dramatic play area with themes that change monthly.

2009-10 Classes offered:
The 2's class is designed to provide a safe and supportive environment for young children to explore their world. They will be exposed to playmates, activities, and language which will provide a solid foundation for later years. Parent involvement and the co-op structure will be crucial to the growth and direction of this class.
The 3's class is designed to help children develop socialization skills and to gain independence from their parents. Learning respect for the group process and for the rights of individuals is an essential part of the preschool experience.
The Mixed-Age classes offers children a sense of family with classmates and an opportunity to spend more than one year with the same teacher. An environment of cooperation and caring will foster regard for individuality and helpfulness. The curriculum is easily extended to meet the needs of a wide range of developmental levels in this class.
The Pre-K class augments the skills acquired in previous preschool classes. It offers stimulating activities for children who are not chronologically or developmentally ready for kindergarten. The curriculum emphasizes responsibility, problem-solving skills, and language and pre-reading development. Math skills are developed in a completely hands-on math lab.
LEAP (Learning Enrichment and Activity Program) is a play-based enrichment program designed to continue skills established in both Mixed Age classes and Pre-K. This program is offered on Fridays from 1:00 - 4:00 for students moving into Kindergarten in the fall.
Tigard Playschool offers an Extended Day Program. This program is optional and is offered at an additional cost. Extended Day is available for students in the 3's class, Mixed-Age 9am class, and Pre-K class. It runs Mondays and Thursdays from 11:30 - 1:00 in Parker Hall. The program's curriculum is an extension of the themes and concepts being learned in your child's class. The program will take the concepts your child is learning and reinforce and expand on them using art, science, math, movement, music and literacy. All attending children must bring their own lunch.

Why is Our School Unique?
No one can say it better than our students!
"I like my teacher. She plays with us."
Kevin, age 4
Numerous studies have shown that young children learn best in an experiential environment where they are encouraged to play. Instead of worksheets and drills, Tigard Playschool emphasizes building, pretending, creating, and fun. In fact, at our school you'll find the teachers right down on the floor with the kids! Whether they are dancing, singing, playing make-believe, or giving monster pushes on the swings, our teachers are always favorite playmates.
"I like my teacher because she asks me what I want to do."
Brian, age 5
Each child brings to the classroom his/her own distinct personality with differing needs, desires, and abilities. At Tigard Playschool, students are allowed to choose their activities from a number of available options. At the same time, however, our teachers gently encourage children to step outside of their comfort zone to try something new.
"I like to do art because I like to get messy."
Evan, age 4
The students at Tigard Playschool are encouraged to explore. The classrooms have been arranged so that kids can be free to be kids. If they like to use big globs of glue, okay! If fingers feel better than paint brushes, go for it! Art projects are about the discovery process and taking pride in something you have created. Children do not simply re-create an adult-modeled project. Instead, they are given the freedom to design their own masterpieces.
"Are you my parent teacher today?"
Jacob, age 3 (Repeated every day before school)
Cooperative playschools provide a positive experience for both parent and child. Parents are able to observe classroom activities and are reassured that their children are safe and happy. With Mom or Dad by their side, children tend to make an easier transition into school. At Tigard Playschool, parents are valued as an important part of the teaching team. As such, they receive training and guidance that emphasizes how to interact positively with children in the classroom. Most importantly, however, our teachers are stellar role models! As one parent stated, "I learn something new from them every time I work in the classroom."
"My teacher is nice. She likes me a lot."
Emma, age 4
Our teachers honor, respect, and show compassion for every child they teach, and are committed to establishing trusting relationships. They are patient in explaining expectations, lovingly set clear limits, and teach the children to respect others as well as themselves. At Tigard Playschool, children get the love they need to grow and prepare for a lifetime of learning.
